What should I look for in a wedding videographer's portfolio to ensure quality?
This article is for those of you who are apprehensive about ensuring quality in the wedding videographer you ultimately go with for your wedding day. There are a multitude of things to look out for in a wedding videographers portfolio (& beyond) which are listed & discussed below, I hope this helps:
How authentic is each wedding film they create?
If, when reviewing their work, you can see that they are truly honouring each wedding client couple, their unique connection & story in the films you see, you’re on the right track to find a quality supplier. However, if you feel that most of their films feel generic or what some people call “cookie-cutter” in their approach, this is something to consider. Many videographers, if they have taken on too much work simply don’t have the time to consider your story, tune into the day & be present to capture the subtle moments & nuances that a quality wedding videographer will catch. This is what I would look out for in my professional experience, that separates a quality wedding videographer from the rest.
How active are they online?
What you should be looking for are signs of activity & positive engagement across platforms, namely their website & socials. If all the visuals & portfolio films displayed on their website/socials look outdated this is a red flag. Quality wedding videographers will do their very best to keep active on socials, upload their latest work & let people know what their up to. The easiest way to quickly review this is to see if they are posting on Instagram Stories. Any high quality videographer will be active here to show their active clientele & enquiring customers that they are engrossed in their wedding videography business, either editing unique films, talking about the industry or showing behind the scenes (BTS) of them working on a wedding day at different venues. This is a further incredibly important thing to look out for.
How diverse & extensive is their wedding videography work?
Use their social media pages & website to assess how many years they have been in the industry. Also, look out for diversity in their portfolio with reference to a variety of wedding venue locations & different types of weddings (barn weddings in forests & or Castle weddings in the suburbs) - diversity displays competence & that a variety of previous client couples have been confident in their choice to go with this wedding videographer in question.
Google reviews, Google Reviews!
The most bullet proof method of determining the unbiased quality of the wedding videographer you want to go with is how they have been reviewed, particularly on Google. Google reviews are incredibly helpful for couples planning their wedding as videographers can’t manipulate or forge fake reviews (like they might on their own website that they own). You can peak inside the client experience through these unbiased reviews & see not only the competence of their videography skill but also how they we’re as a professional on the day. As a professional wedding videographer who knows this industry well, this would be my first port of call to get the lay of the land on their quality.
I hope this helps.
P.S. Many couples, when they first start planning think that all that matters is how amazing the work is. As a professional in this industry, I would slightly push back on this. A videographer can be an an amazingly talented bully. I’ve unfortunately seen this before (with various suppliers not me haha) on the wedding day who seek to control & bend the day to suit their own priorities, not that of the couple. Keep in mind that whoever you choose for your wedding that they will be with you for roughly 12 hours - if that isn’t a big signal to make sure you enjoy their company on a human level, over everything else, I don’t know what else is. Heed this helpful warning guys!
